ABOUT MAKECADE

The Indie Retro Browser Arcade • Engineered by ROSS
Our Philosophy: Zero downloads. Zero launchers. Zero paywalls. Makecade is born from a passion for classic 8-bit and 16-bit arcade aesthetics, engineered entirely with open web standards so anyone can play instant, 60-FPS retro games on any browser, desktop, or mobile device.

1. The Makecade Story & Vision

Makecade began with a single question: Why did modern web gaming become overwhelmed with bloated app wrappers, invasive logins, and multi-gigabyte installations when modern web browsers are faster than ever?

Spearheaded by solo engineer and digital artist ROSS, Makecade was built to prove that the modern browser is the ultimate arcade cabinet. By harnessing the HTML5 <canvas> API, high-frequency Web Audio synthesizers, and Cloudflare's serverless edge network, Makecade delivers arcade games that boot within 500 milliseconds, render at a silky-smooth 60 frames per second, and instantly connect players across the globe through live scoreboards.

2. Engineering & Platform Architecture

Every game on Makecade is crafted with a performance-first mindset. Here is how our technology stack operates under the hood:

🎨 Canvas 2D Pixel Pipeline

Instead of heavy third-party gaming engines that ship megabytes of runtime garbage, our games utilize lean, custom-tailored Canvas 2D render loops. Integer pixel rounding and double-buffered sprite blitting eliminate jitter and tearing.

🔊 Web Audio Synthesis

Real-time chiptune music and sound effects are generated algorithmically using the Web Audio API's AudioContext, square wave oscillators, and white noise buffers, creating authentic retro crunch with zero audio download latency.

⚡ Cloudflare Edge Routing

The entire Makecade platform is distributed globally via Cloudflare Workers and Cloudflare Pages. Routing rules, asset caches, and sitemaps are served from over 300 edge cities worldwide for sub-20ms TTFB.

🏆 Firestore Live Scoreboards

Scores are validated and streamed in real-time via Google Cloud Firebase (Cloud Firestore). Players see their global ranking shift dynamically as scores are beaten across the world without reloading the page.

3. The Featured Games Catalog

Each title in the Makecade catalog brings a distinct arcade challenge:

🗡️ Space Ninja: Storm Striker

A high-velocity cyberpunk action platformer. You play as a cybernetic assassin navigating orbital derelicts infested with rogue droids and laser turrets. Master the air dash with invincibility frames, throw piercing shurikens with heat cooldown management, and execute precision wall-clings to overcome three intense boss encounters.

🌀 Invert: Gravity Runner

A minimalist, white-knuckle test of spatial reflexes. In Invert, you cannot jump; you can only flip gravity. One tap or keypress reverses gravity instantaneously as you hurtle through a jagged canyon of crystal stalactites and gravitational anomalies. Speed scales continuously with distance.

🎵 Skyward Beat: Rhythm Platformer

Where rhythm meets platforming. Every vertical jump, floating bounce-pad, and laser hazard synchronizes to the tempo of an original electronic chiptune soundtrack. Featuring centisecond precision timers and jump buffering, Skyward Beat is designed for hardcore speedrunners aiming for world records.

🧱 Battetris: Shared Grid Turf War

A revolutionary twist on classic block puzzle mechanics. Two players operate simultaneously on a single, shared wide grid. Clearing lines not only scores points but dumps penalty garbage blocks directly into your opponent's play area while claiming grid territory.

🥊 Pixel Fighter: Arena Brawler

An explosive homage to classic 90s tournament fighters. Featuring 8 distinct combatants—from the heavy-hitting Brawler and precision Blade Master to the agility of the Shadow Rogue. Complete with combo chains, super meter meters, and multi-player arena battles.

🏎️ Arcade Rally Kart 3D: Multiplayer Racer

A high-speed 3D rally kart racer powered by Godot 4 Jolt physics and a custom room relay server. Hop-drift around tight switchbacks to charge 3-tier mini-turbos, toss combat items, and race friends or COM opponents across procedural desert and coastal mountain tracks.

4. Meet the Creator: ROSS

ROSS is an independent software engineer, retro gaming enthusiast, and creative technologist based in the United Kingdom. With deep expertise across TypeScript, browser graphics, real-time cloud backends, and game design, ROSS designs and programs Makecade as an open homage to the golden age of coin-op arcades.

In addition to retro games, ROSS develops high-performance geospatial data portals, including the Makecade Map Portal, which visualizes UK demographic data, Ofsted school catchments, and financial resilience metrics for hundreds of thousands of users.

5. The AI Game Generation Pipeline

Makecade is not just a gaming arcade; it is also a living laboratory for next-generation game design. Through our Makecade Build Platform, we are pioneering AI-assisted game development. Anyone can submit a concept or mechanic, and our pipeline helps generate, tune, and package the playable code—the best of which graduate to become permanent arcade entries on Makecade.
